I feel compelled to comment on yesterday's lack of action on the part of our legislators. With the exception of two Republican senators who joined with Democrats and Independents to enact regulations to prevent anyone on the no-fly list or suspected terrorist list from purchasing a gun, The Republicans once again solidified their block against any form of gun regulation, no matter what. Even the NRA has expressed some willingness to consider at least these restrictions.
Now before I get any responses trying to educate me about how these sort of regulations will not prevent further mass murders... Yes, I agree. I know anyone who is determined to commit such atrocities will find a way to defeat our best efforts to keep assault weapons out of their hands. HOWEVER, this does not mean we should not take steps to at least make it more difficult for them. And don't start in on me about the Constitution. I and in no way advocating legislation to take away guns, or even to remove assault weapons from those who enjoy their use as sports such as target shooting. but even the founding fathers realized the possibility of some restrictions becoming necessary. The wording includes the phrase "... a well regulated militia..." The word regulated is key here. Why are those who so passionately shout their defense of the 2nd Amendment ignore the admission of those who wrote the bill that some sort of regulations would be acceptable?
Anyway, those are my thoughts. Thank you for listening to my personal rant here. My only request is that whether you agree or disagree with me, and feel the need to respond, please keep it civil and polite. I hope you noticed I refrained from name-calling and other derogatory hate-mongering. Much can be accomplished with civil discourse. Nothing is ever made better by hate-filled anger.
