Why in the world should I go to a museum? They are expensive, stuffy, old places where you just stand around looking at old stuff... right? WRONG! Museums are incredible places where the wonders of the universe are there for you to explore every day. Museums come in all sizes and shapes for all manner of interests. Beyond the art and science museums we normally think of, there are small local museums depicting something incredible about the local history or culture. Some museums have a specific focus such as railroad models, toys, a particular person of historical interest, almost anything you can imagine. All you have to do is check out your local community to find something of interest. As far as just a bunch of old junk on display behind glass walls, again, WRONG! Today's modern museums, while they still contain many artifacts behind glass walls, much has changed. Thanks to the many hard working volunteers found in museums, there are many artifacts covering a wide range of topics, out for you to handle and talk about. By the way, if you have ever wanted to volunteer someplace incredible, look no further than your local museum. They are always in need of great volunteers. In addition to volunteers, many museums also employ staff members whose sole purpose is to develop fun, entertaining ways to help educate the public about whatever the museum is promoting. Through special programs, shows, classes, en-actors, just to name a few, museums make learning come alive and fun places to visit. For example, and I admit to a bit of partiality because I work there, The Denver Museum of Nature and Science is an incredibly dynamic place. On any given day, you can witness a heart or lung dissection and actually participate in the process, talk to a pirate about bacteria, witness Galileo demonstrate gravity, visit with an astronaut on Mars, Handle dinosaur bones millions of years old, see liquid nitrogen geysers, talk to time-traveling visitors from the past about the stars, dinosaurs, or almost anything you can imagine. If you have children, they can also test out how water flows, build structures of their own design, create imaginative art projects, listen to stories... Are you getting the idea? Museums are fun (as well as educational)? But aren't they expensive? Well, possibly. However, museums also have a wide variety of special programs and rates to help reduce much of the cost. Memberships, free days, special offers, school groups especially can often get free admission, so you might want to think about helping chaperon your child's field trip and get in free that way. No matter what your interest, you can find a museum that shares your passion. Get out there and see what all the fuss is about. |
